The School of Arts and Sciences supports a myriad of outreach activities, and the Department of English is a fundamental part of this mission.
Here are some of the major activities organized by the Department.
Creative Writing Competition
The creative writing competition is an annual event held by the Department of English Language Instruction and is open to all undergraduate students from both Beirut and Byblos campuses. Students can participate in two categories: essay writing and short story writing. Prizes are awarded to the best two entries in each category. This year, iPads and iPods were given to the winners in memorial of Haas Mroue, provided by his family. The winners were Xena Amro (first prize) and Diala Al-Masri (second prize) for short stories; Sarah Alice Al Eid (first prize) and Lily Hamouche (second prize).

Fun with Reading
This project trains LAU Community Facilitators (LCFs) who will be responsible for individual reading clubs made up of Secondary/High School students in Lebanon. These book clubs would act as miniature reading communities whose tasks involve selecting, reading, discussing, and actually “experiencing” books through personal response and extra-curricular activities.

The Department annually organizes a series of lectures related to English language learning and teaching. This year speakers included Ms. Mishka Mojabber (poetry reading), Mr. Brian Prescott-Decie (MOOCs), Ms. Deema Dakakni (the brain and learning), and Ms. Samira Shami (the use of rubrics).
